It was a gray afternoon, and I was kicking back with a mocha latte and good company at our local dog-friendly cafe. My terrier Pixie was near me, sipping a Pup Cup (the cafe's specialty beef bone broth), while my lab mix Bruno was enjoying one of the best bones for big dogs.

He has to hold it down with two heavy paws while he gnaws hard as the sweet bone marrow leaks out. There's really no better dog treat than a big, juicy bone. But what dog bones can truly be called the "best bones for big dogs"? Here's what I look for in a dog chew bone for my dogs.

Why Large K9s Need Big Dog Bones

When it comes to big dogs like my lab mix Bruno or even bigger pups like my friend's Great Dane, bone size is incredibly important. If the bone is too small, a large dog can easily swallow the bone whole. And believe it or not, they will.

Who knows why? One minute, they're enjoying chew time, and the next—a disappearing act.

But this is no magician's trick. It's dangerous. Dogs can choke on bones that are too small for them. And beware the blockage. It might require surgery.

A whole bone is not digestible.

To prevent swallowing, the bone must be bigger than a dog's head, and for some dogs, like a full-grown mastiff, that's a tall order.

The bone's wall must also be able to withstand aggressive chewing. The bigger a dog is, the more pressure they can apply to a bone. Bruno can destroy most dog bones in seconds. And that's not a flex. It's actually a safety concern. A shattered bone becomes a swallow risk. Plus, it's sharp. So, I'm not only dealing with a blockage.

So what's left?

Beef Bones Only

The best dog bones come from beef cattle. Beef cattle have stronger bones than dairy cattle because they're processed at a younger age, under 29 months old and because they haven't spent their life producing milk and leaching calcium out of their bones. If a dog bone doesn't say if it comes from beef cattle, I don't buy it.

USA Born and Raised

I also want to support local jobs. So, I try to buy from USA-based dog bone vendors who only get their dog bones from USA-based cattle ranches. That way, there's no question about where the bones came from. The supply chain is very traceable—ranch to dog.

Grass-fed, Pasture Raised

Then, grass-fed is a nice thing to look for when you can find it. Did you know grass-fed beef has 2.5X the omega 3 and 20% less saturated fat? Buying pasture-raised, grass-fed beef bones isn't just about better animal welfare, although I agree cows shouldn't spend their whole lives in muddy pins and warehouses.

The chews need to be safe. Safety first! Everything from the way the bones are prepared to their freshness to how they're packaged influences bone integrity. And for big dogs, especially, you want a strong bone.
