Long Lasting Bones for Dogs: Size, Density, Shape and More to Consider

Last Saturday, I hosted a cozy backyard brunch for a few of my close neighbors. And by cozy, I mean 4 humans and twice as many dogs because, in my neighborhood, having an "only dog" is just plain weird. They go everywhere with us. And the more the merrier.

As we (the humans) sipped our steaming mugs of hot cocoa and chatted over sweet and savory breakfast foods at 1 in the afternoon, the dogs roamed, sniffed, and later settled in for their own brunch—meaty marrow bone for dogs. The rich marrow in marrow bones for dogs is a reward for dogs. They can only access a little at a time during a chew session. It's buttery and a little sweet. First, a long lasting bone will be a real dog bone. So, it's not made of plastic, rubber, or rawhide. Not only do these not stand up to aggressive chewing. They're also not healthy bones for dogs. These contain a lot of chemicals that dogs shouldn't have in their diet. Some are carcinogens. So, that's a "Nope!"

So, real marrow bones for dogs are the single ingredient, long-lasting, healthy option.

Next the bone needs to come from an animal with dense bones that don't shatter or crush easily. Beef cattle produce some of the densest bones.

But say no to dairy cows. A lifetime of milk production plus the advanced age at which they're processed means weak bones. If a dog bone vendor doesn't say it comes from beef cattle, then you may be getting a dairy cow bone. Not only will it not last. A bone that breaks is inherently unsafe. It becomes a choking hazard. I must take it away immediately to protect my pup. And I don't know about you, but that sounds like a waste of money.

Next, preparation matters. A slow and low-heat cooking process gets a bone to the right density for safe and long-lasting chewing. That means dinner bones are out. They've been cooked at too high a temperature.

And finally, every dog bone should have an expiration date on it. That's because an old beef bone starts to break down. That said, a high-quality beef marrow bone for dogs can last up to two years. And once you open it, a dog can chew on the same bone for months. You'll just need to freeze it in between uses to make sure stuff doesn't grow on it.
