Peanut Butter Dog Bones: The Best Bones to Stuff with Tasty Fillings

Peanut butter dog bones are a popular treat for dogs! My lab mix, Bruno, lights up and starts wagging when he hears me bring out the natural peanut butter jar, even when it's just me making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But finding the right bones for your peanut butter dog bone filling recipe is a challenge. So, I share my favorite one, plus tips for making the perfect stuffed bones.

What are peanut butter dog bones?

Peanut butter dog bones can describe two distinct but equally tasty dog bone treats —either homemade peanut butter dog treats or traditional dog bones stuffed with peanut butter.

While homemade peanut butter treats can be delicious, they take more work to prepare. That's why I love traditional (but healthy) dog bones stuffed with peanut butter. And my 3 pups agree! They're trying to lick it off the roofs of their mouths for hours. JK.

Dog bones filled with peanut butter are quick and easy. Peanut butter has a lot of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. At the same time, the bone may have a little leftover marrow and meaty bits my dogs love. Marrow bones can also contain calcium, iron, B12, healthy fats, and more protein.

Why refill dog bones with peanut butter?

It's true that my peanut butter dog bone-filling recipe isn't as nutritious as real beef marrow bones. But this is a great way for my dogs to get more chew sessions out of each bone. I save money, and I save the time I would spend making homemade treats.

Just make sure you choose the right bones because some bones can shatter or don't have good crevices to make a dog bone with peanut butter filling.

Is peanut butter good for dog treats?

Yes, peanut butter is good for dog treats. It's not an everyday food in our house—no treat is. But once a week or so, I add peanut butter to our dog bone schedule for some variety.

Are peanut butter-filled bones safe for dogs?

Yes. Peanut butter dog bones are generally safe as long as you choose a dog bone that is durable and unlikely to cause a choking hazard. I also always supervise chewing sessions because I like to be extra safe.

How do I choose peanut butter?

I choose peanut butter that has the fewest ingredients possible. And even peanut butter that has "natural" on the label may have added sugar and palm oil. So, I read the labels. I try to get as close to the real deal as I can. Peanuts and a little salt, which acts as a natural preservative. Smuckers peanut butter is just peanuts and salt. I'm sure there are others. But only give this treat outside because any peanut butter can be messy.

You can also make homemade peanut butter to keep the ingredients simpler and healthier. All you have to do is blend unsalted, roasted peanuts. Just make sure to blend until the oils are released, and it becomes creamy, which can take a few minutes.

But no, I don't grind my peanuts. I don't have that kind of time on my hands. Do you?

Ingredients to Avoid

So, a little palm oil or sugar isn't great. But it's not dangerous. Some ingredients are.

Keep in mind that peanut butter often comes with chocolate. Avoid that.

Also, make sure it doesn't have Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that causes hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar) in dogs. It can be fatal. Fortunately, humans do not respond the same way.

How to make peanut butter filling for dog bones?

You can use straight peanut butter. You can use the narrow end of a spoon or a butter knife to push the treat into the bone.

You can also combine peanut butter with other healthy ingredients. My dogs also love my peanut butter and pumpkin dog bone recipe. I use unsweetened pumpkin puree or cooked butternut squash. You can find more refill ideas in my free dog bone-filling recipe guide.

What did I look for in bones to stuff with peanut butter?

Now, I've tried several different bones. And I don't want to overcomplicate this by giving you 10 bones you could use. But I want to share why I chose this particular dog bone and why we use it all the time.

Single-Ingredient

And I think that single ingredient should be a real dog bone. When you buy the best refillable bone it will already be filled with naturally-occurring, super-nutritious bone marrow. But after several chew sessions, that marrow will be gone, and you can try my dog bone recipe with peanut butter.

No need to worry about preservatives, artificial flavors, or any other needless or unhealthy ingredient. These are entirely healthy and safe!

Grass-Fed / Pasture-Raised

Grass-fed cattle have more healthy fats and less saturated fat. Plus, it's no secret to anyone that I care about animal welfare. I volunteer at our local pet shelter and educate people about healthy dog treats on my blog. I like to support humane animal-raising practices, even if I enjoy a juicy hamburger as much as the next American.

Nutritious

These single-ingredient beef bones aren't just fun. They're also nutritious! They're low in calories, high in healthy fats, and packed with nutrients.

They contain collagen (the body's most abundant protein), iron, and Vitamin B. These nutrients are excellent for healthy skin and coat, digestive system, and joints. Not to mention, peanut butter dog bones offer even more protein and healthy fats.

Flavorful

The primary purpose of offering peanut butter bones is for your pup to enjoy them, right? These are filled with flavor!

Not only is the beef bone initially stuffed with tasty bone marrow, but once the marrow is all gone, you can stuff it with peanut butter. My terrier Pixie drools over peanut butter!

Made & Sourced in the United States

I always recommend offering only bones made and sourced in the United States. It's best to know where the bone comes from to ensure it's safe and healthy. In the US, the FDA regulates pet foods with similar rigor to overseeing human food.

The bones I choose for my dogs are sourced from grass-fed, free-range cattle born and raised in the US.

Long-Lasting

My pups can gnaw on these for a while, and when you're ready for them to take a break, I can freeze them so they stay fresh. When all the marrow is gone, you can stuff them with peanut butter.

The ones I choose for my peanut butter filling for dog bones can even stand up to aggressive chewing. That's important. Both Bruno and Pixie can destroy grocery store bones in seconds.

But even though these bones last "forever," I limit chew time to 2-3 times a week for 15-20 minutes.

That's because The American Kennel Club recommends that treats be no more than 10% of a dog's diet. You don't want to spoil their dinner.

Also, if you are giving them a bone with marrow inside, you don't want them to eat it all at once. Spread that nutrition out.

Safe

I don't have to worry about bones breaking off, being too small, and posing a choking hazard with these.

They're entirely safe for dogs up to 50lb. They're durable enough not to break off but not so hard that your dog can damage their teeth on them. They undergo a slow and low heat preparation process to achieve this density. So the one I recommend for my dog bone recipe with peanut butter is safe for most dogs.

Bone size matters for safety because if the bones are too small my dog might try to (or accidentally) swallow them whole. I never give my dogs bones so they can put them completely in their mouths.

Now, my lab mix, Bruno, is over 50lb, so I have a different refillable bone to share if you have a big dog, too.

Easy to Stuff with Peanut Butter

Finally, the bones have to be perfect for stuffing. Once the marrow is gone, they're so easy to stuff with peanut butter.
